Jamaica is the 3rd largest island in the carribean The island which sits 18 15 N, 77 30 W – discovered by Christopher COLUMBUS in 1494 – was settled by the Spanish early in the 16th century. In 1655 the English seized control of the island and the island became an English colony until 1962 when it gained Independence.
Although the island boast a population of only roughly 3million Jamaicans have always been at the forefront of world events in politics, The right Hon. Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Music in the form of ska, reggae and dancehall which has produced world icons like Bob marley, sports from the great Herb Mckinley to current fastest man in the world Usain bolt.
Its capital Kingston is at once one of the cultural meccas of the world and the sin city with a murder rate that guarantees its notoriety. A land of contradictions, ghettos juxtaposed against million dollar homes, it’s not unfounded to see a donkey cart next to a Mercedes or Range Rover.
