LOL I love the range of comments on this post. I'm a single Canadian female and have lived in Jamaica alone (that's right...NOT with a man). I would say to anyone who's had a bad experience there didn't ever get to really see what REAL Jamaica is like.

@Erman - you can't judge an entire island based on one woman in Ochi who wants your money. There are NUFF gainfully employed and well educated people in Jamaica who can hold their own! The whole island isn't full of hustlers asking you for things. Just the parts you went to LOL. If you choose to hang out in tourist areas and get hustled that's your choice.

@Jay - I'm Canadian....try pissing me off and see how aggressive I can be LOL!!

@Sachi - Amen sister (or brother??)....and thank you for posting what you did!

Hmmmm clearly you have been visiting the wrong Jamaica and are related to the wrong Jamaicans. I am a Jamaican and I have had a confrontation of any sort with anyone...well never and by my writings you will have seen I do get pissed off rather often. People who resort to violence as a first defense are usually uneducated and typically not too bright. which is hardly an image that the average Jamaican fall in. So try taking your grand mother to anger management since it might be a bit late for her to get an education.

I think that alot of the jamaican stereotypes are often true. My Mothers is from there and I've been there.
Yes if jamaicans were not agressive then try pissing one of them off and see what will happen. The murder rate speaks volumes!! I even include my mother in these jamaican stereotypes because she fits them. If they are not homophobic then go there and start openly telling people that you are gay and if you mae it back home safely the gods are with you!! People ne

I am a Jamaican in the UK and I have heard many people who have believed a lot of those myths. They look at me and say "you don't look like a Jamaican". Well what is a Jamaican supposed to look like? It has more often than not been misunderstanding by African people or white people who think I have a white parent and a black parent. (Atcually, my dad is light-skinned, from St Elizabeth).

A collegue of mine went to Ocho Rios for a wedding and came back and told the whole office that Jamaica was horrible. However, she stayed in the hotel the whole time apart from an organised trip to Dunn's River, got food poisoning and there were people begging outside the big hotels. I was a little annoyed that she told everyone that, and she put everyone off visiting because "Barbados is better"!

I am so paranoid about not being late because of people's views of black people in general being late! But a friend of mine is Asian and she gets the same thing. But I have friends who no matter what their background, are just always late, and others who aren't. That's people for you.

Yeah , you are right Xhanubis, I am an American living in Jamaica for over 10 years and Jamaica like everywhere else in the world is diverse and we have good people and bad people. I am sick of "First World" people using a bad experience to label an entire country. If I get robbed by a Canadian am I going to say all Canadians are lazy thieves. Give me a break . I really liked this article
